ABSTRACT

This chapter deepens the analysis described in chapter 10, focusing on matches that were won by a two-goal margin. Thus, undeserved and lucky wins can, on the one hand, be largely ignored but the remaining games can, on the other hand, provide an even better basis for investigating the differences between winning and losing teams. This chapter compares the tactical performances of teams winning (or losing) by a two-goal margin, based on a Big Data field study from the German Bundesliga. Positional data open up many new possibilities to model the tactical aspects of the game, find patterns, and create novel, advanced performance measures. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) introduced in this chapter include pressing index.
