ABSTRACT

Systems and playing styles receive more and more attention these days. Many coaches do not only employ one system of play, but rather choose from a variety of systems to optimally react to the opposition’s tactics, even during the game. A prime example from the Bundesliga is 1. FC Köln. Positional data open up many new possibilities to model tactical aspects of the game, find patterns, and create novel, advanced performance measures. This chapter investigates how previously introduced Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) mirrored Cologne’s performance when playing in a 4–4–2 compared to playing in a 4–2–3–1 system, and discusses the findings.
