ABSTRACT

The concluding chapter of this monograph summarizes the content of the previous chapters on positional data analysis, which opens up many new possibilities to model the tactical aspects of the game, find patterns, and create novel, advanced performance measures. The results discussed are embedded within the debate between possession and counterattacking playing styles in professional football; and it is highlighted how real-time positional data analysis can shed new light on crucial questions arising from both sports science and daily practice on an elite level. Furthermore, the development of this field of research is discussed, including the current impact of positional data. Finally, an outlook is provided on how positional data analysis may evolve in the future, revolutionizing match analysis as we know it today.
