ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the history of inequality and unemployment in America, and focuses on the major differences of the two eras, the Golden Age and the Age of Globalization. The political and economic dominance of America over much of the world created a flow of demand for American goods and services, a relatively high rate of economic growth, and weaker recessions. America's economy dominated the world from 1945 to 1970. It was a Golden Age for American capitalism. Trade unions had become strong during the Great Depression with the help of the progressive Roosevelt Administration. The chapter presents the specific questions about inequality and unemployment in American history. The questions are: what has been the effect of different eras on inequality? what was the effect of the Golden Age on inequality? and what was the effect of the Age of Globalization on inequality?
