ABSTRACT

This chapter explains changes to organizational practice and policy in sport as the gold standard for promoting positive psychosocial health in high-level athletes, and offer examples of sport policy in practice. As awareness of threats to athlete psychosocial health grows, several high-level sport organizations have enacted their own policies to prevent psychosocial health concerns and promote athlete well-being. The chapter highlights several such policies, ranging from those which consist of a series of guidelines, to those taking a more comprehensive approach by integrating policy with specific prevention programming, coach/staff education, and health messaging campaigns. The subordinate levels of the spectrum are much likelier to succeed when governed by strong policies supporting healthy norms. The plan exemplifies a comprehensive and interconnected approach to prevention of emotional health concerns in elite UK athletes. One of the outputs targeted by the plan is training for sport personnel and significant others on how to recognize emotional health problems.
