ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses key concepts and research findings that have advanced understanding of eating disorders and body image concerns in sport, particularly as they pertain to coaching and coaching education. Estimates on the prevalence of eating disorders in athletes are highly variable across studies, though these discrepancies can be explained by differences in the composition and representativeness of samples, sample sizes, when data were collected, and measurements used to assess eating disorder symptoms. Research suggests body image concerns are significant even in the absence of eating pathology. Several psychological factors also likely play a role in eating disorders and body image concerns in athletes. Coaches are an important conduit by which athletes affected by eating disorders can reach professional help. Successful eating disorder treatment requires a multidisciplinary team of professionals to ensure that athletes receive thorough, consistent, and quality care.
