ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to dispel some of the myths that surround the definition and conceptualisation of reflective practice. It focuses on literature in order to present a critical insight into the landscape of theoretical and practical understanding of the concept within the field of sports coaching. The chapter offers a discussion of how reflective practice can be made accessible for those working in the field. Reflective practice is fundamentally important within sports coaching, therefore, because it is the conduit through which we actually learn about doing sports coaching. In becoming a reflective practitioner, a coach must understand the requirement to embrace an all-encompassing attitude to practice that requires them to commit to professional and personal development. The general premise of the body of research was that by improving a coach’s ability to reflect their practice would also improve as a result of more significant reflective learning emanating from better reflective practice.
