ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an examination of key concepts and presents a chronological account of the literature that represents our understanding of a coaching career. In every account of retirement or transition in sport, there are several key terms that will be used with consistency. For a high proportion of coaches, the decision to pursue a career in coaching is borne out of their involvement in sport as an athlete. There are widespread misconceptions about the career development of sports coaches, with the assumption that linear stages and milestones characterise the progression from novice to expert coach. Coping with the challenges of a career as a coach and the resultant transitions can be facilitated by resources to promote effective stress management. The challenge of any career transition in coaching whether temporary or permanent can be facilitated by resources such as active coping strategies, social support, and pre-retirement planning.
