ABSTRACT

Scholarship and academic publishing are critical elements in many tenure case driven by the publish or perish mantra. This chapter begins by discussing the importance of academic publishing, the various types of academic publications, and how pre-tenure faculty should develop a research agenda to guide scholarly activities. Following this discussion, the chapter turns to consider specific aspects of research activities that can cause challenges for pre-tenure faculty including grants and contracts, academic conferences, as well as collaborating with colleagues and students. Finally, the chapter concludes by discussing productive writing strategies, including how to successfully write every day and regain lost writing momentum.
