ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an extract of a letter from Mr. William Adam to Lord William Bentinck, on vernacular education. In the letter, Adam presents the state of village schools in India and their defects. He provides opinions on female education, native language and English language education, vernacular instruction, and on the improvement of Sanskrit education in India.
