ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a letter from Jonathan Duncan, Resident, Benares, No. 17, dated 1st January 1792, to the Earl of Cornwallis, K.G., Governor-General in Council. In the letter, Duncan suggests that the surplus revenue expected to be derived from the permanent settlement could be used to establish the Institution of a Hindoo College or Academy for the preservation and cultivation of the Laws, Literature and Religion of that nation. He also mentions important advantages seemed derivable from such an establishment.
