ABSTRACT

The achievement of success on any construction project may be a delusion without the appropriate selection and use of a construction procurement method. This chapter discusses the procurement methods of construction projects by first differentiating a construction procurement method from a construction procurement strategy. The chapter further explains the general factors to be considered by clients in selecting construction procurement methods. In addition, the various procurement methods (conventional, non-conventional, integrated and sustainable) that have been in use to date are discussed. Furthermore, a case is advanced regarding the disparity and confusion brought about by the existing different design and construction processes leading to other construction procurement methods. The shortfall of design and construction processes in comparison with the number of procurement methods is particularly noted. The chapter notes and explains that, apart from the documented procurement methods, there are many other unrecognized and undocumented construction procurement methods that are in use in Africa and probably also in other less developed countries. Lastly, the need to investigate the procurement methods that are predominantly adopted for construction projects in Africa and harmonize them with the achievement of sustainable design and construction projects is emphasized.
