ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses, on one hand, common presence sponsors, via place release, environmental serendipity; on the other hand, common presence sponsors, via place realization, environmental order. The most difficult and puzzling aspect of place release and place realization is the reconciling impulse's placement in the two triads' initiating position. Moments of place release involve a range of engagement in relation to the relative roles of the experiencer versus the world in which the experience happens. The moment in which unexpected experiences happen; situations in which the unexpected experience triggers a chain of consequential place events, some of which are only indirectly relatable to the original experience; and, ways that aspects of the environmental ensemble and people-in-place contribute to situations of place release. In terms of place release, third places are significant because they typically involve some manner of novelty that may include a diverse population, a fluid structure, and user participation.
