ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a novel approach to landscape architecture education as the training ground for a transformative landscape architecture practice that may be able to address the wicked problems that contemporary society faces. It focuses on the goals, experiences, and lessons learned in order to sketch out a roadmap for the future of landscape architecture education, challenging traditional assumptions about the roles of academics and practitioners. Contemporary landscape architecture has come a long way from its beaux-arts roots. It has become a science with unique body of knowledge, theories and methods for the “systematic study of landscapes themselves, and of processes of landscape-making” aimed at the promotion of “substantial social, economic, and environmental benefits”. The chapter outlines the vision for new educational model for landscape architecture that aims to empower students to promote transformative landscape change. Students on the course learned about the theories behind participation, methods and processes for the co-production and sharing of transdisciplinary knowledge around the landscape.
