Extending quality management through the supply chain
This chapter introduces the challenges of managing supply chain quality to meet the needs of the project, and confirms the need for the project team to take an active role in assuring it. The importance of effective team working between the project and the Procurement function is highlighted, to take quality into account in vendor selection. The need for clear and unambiguous communication of requirements and acceptance criteria is discussed, and how the relationship between the project team and the vendor can affect success. Taking this a step further, supplier development is explained, and its benefits seen in aerospace and automotive. The use of quality incentives is illustrated with examples, and the risks and benefits identified and discussed.
