Quality analysis techniques

WithAndrew Wright, Therese Lawlor-Wright

This chapter looks into the core concepts of measurement, and compares ‘accuracy’ and ‘precision’, before moving on to review a range of techniques for collecting data for analysis of quality. Analysis tools are then covered, especially root cause analysis using 5Ys, as treating the symptoms of a problem rather than the root cause can lead to wasted time and cost. The Deming cycle of continuous improvement is presented at the base model for quality improvement, and can be used both on improving products themselves and on project management processes, forming the basis of genuine organisational learning. Since waste is the only cost that can be cut without adverse impact, the chapter concludes with techniques for identifying waste.
