ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces basic concepts surrounding the propagation of periodic soundwaves in enclosed spaces. It covers compression, rarefaction, schematic representation, frequency, harmonics or overtones, and the timbre of sound, before considering room reflections (direct sound, as well as early and late reflections/reverberation). The final section discusses the nature of performance venues and focuses on three main characteristics of reverberant spaces (size of the room, reverberation time, and pre-delay).
