ABSTRACT

The essential first step of joining with the Christian client involves cultivating an understanding of the importance their faith holds or held for them. It is likely they may be worried that the cost of becoming sexually healthy or solving their intimacy issues is to give up their faith. It is important to introduce the idea that it is possible to retain their faith while working towards a healthy sexuality. It is also important that the professional be aware of their own bias or unprocessed religious history in order to be effective. As faithful Christians embark on the journey toward healing, the revelations of sexual harm may become more apparent and linked to specific teachings and beliefs. This often leads to significant anger as well as a sense of betrayal. These reactions are to be expected and will take time to heal.
