ABSTRACT

A scarcity mentality limits options for acceptable forms of sexual expression and identity. With limited options for how one can live and the impulse to reject scientific support for diversity, traditional Christianity is not promoting an abundant life for its adherents. Such scarcity teachings provide limiting definitions of sexuality and are in conflict with the life and teachings of Jesus. These definitions are not reflective of people’s lived realities of how they experience pleasure and intimacy. Neither are they empowering for women. Rather, a scarcity mentality maintains a narrow range of acceptable sexual orientations and gender identifies, promotes the myth of marital monogamy, boxes people into rigid gender roles, and fosters fear and judgment. This contrasts with an abundance mentality, in which there are many possible forms of sexual expression and identity that allows for significant diversity and fosters freedom, innovation, and empowerment.
