ABSTRACT

A short series of experimental lessons was carried out with 3Y in the last term of their third year. The aim of these lessons was to explore what would happen when a teacher, working within all the normal constraints, attempted to elevate into pupil consciousness her good intentions and her problems. The intention to work with all the normal constraints operating on teachers precluded the introduction of expert help such as was used in the NCHE experiments. Lessons were monitored, and teachers were given substantial support and in service training so that they could improve their performance in specific interpersonal skills. Any participation in the lessons by an 'expert', whether by providing guidance or ongoing evaluation, would have made the proposed method more expensive than the typical constraints on teachers would allow.
