ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the procedures for preparing in-text feedback questions and offers examples of in-text feedback questions (FBQs) used to evaluate learning materials presented through various media and concerned with a variety of subject-matters. Preliminary organisers are devices used by the authors primarily to orient students to what is coming in the main body of teaching material. Five common types of preliminary organiser are: a statement of objectives; a list of new and/or prerequisite terms; a concept map; a study guide; an introduction. The location of FBQs in teaching materials which set out to involve the student more actively presents rather different problems. The authors commonly make use of at least three different kinds of retrospective organisers: a concluding summary; a checklist of new terms or concepts introduced; and a self-assessment post-test. The positioning of FBQs to evaluate retrospective organisers is straightforward: it is usually sufficient to locate one FBQ after the summary, after the checklist, or after self-assessment post-test.
