ABSTRACT

Six of the most frequently encountered tests and techniques for assessing phonological and grammatical development are discussed. The review of the technique relating to phonological processes highlights the work of one American and one British authors. Of the remainder, the Edinburgh Articulation Test (EAT) and Language Assessment, Remediation and Screening Procedure (LARSP) are British tests, and the Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation, the Developmental Sentence Analysis and the Carrow Test for Comprehension of Language are American. The review of the technique relating to phonological processes highlights the work of one American and one British author. This test, published in 1971, is intended to give a picture of the developing phonology of young children, at least with respect to consonants, the articulations of which are felt to provide a reliable indication of overall speech mastery.
