ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the status, causes and consequences of urbanisation and urban-rural interaction in Sudan. It provides an account of urban development in Sudan, reflecting socio-economic changes which have been taking place since the turn of the century. The chapter focuses on the causes and implications of internal and international migrations. It stresses the impact of migration on Sudan's urban system and the problems pertaining to urban bias and the degree of interaction between urban and rural areas. The chapter highlights the positive and negative aspects of rural-urban interaction in Sudan, with particular reference to the Khartoum conurbation. It also focuses on material collected by means of a limited questionnaire survey in May 1987, with a group of migrants representing the various areas of out-migration in Sudan. Similar to international migration, internal migration has been stimulated by economic, political and environmental factors.
