ABSTRACT

Through examination of a social studies course syllabus, this chapter presents an example of rigorous curriculum that has been shown to be successful with intellectually average and higher adolescents who have autism. Well-designed curriculum teaches academic content and related skills needed for success in school and community. It engages students in meaningful learning activities, therein increasing appropriate behavior patterns and reducing maladaptive student actions. A social studies syllabus is dissected to illustrate key components of curriculum design.
