ABSTRACT

Attending public school in St. Louis was brutal and left emotional scars that would not heal until after the author received therapy, many years later, while serving a life sentence in a California prison. President Johnson signed H.R. 9567, the Higher Education Act of 1965, into law on November 8, 1965, at his alma mater, Southwest Texas State College in San Marcos, Texas. Corporal punishment, as a mechanism of control in the classroom, has traumatic consequences for the student long after school is out. Weir explains that “impostor phenomenon occurs among high achievers who are unable to internalize and accept their success. They often attribute their accomplishments to luck rather than to ability, and fear that others will eventually unmask them as a fraud”. Project Rebound is an admissions and support program for students transitioning out of the carceral system. It has helped hundreds of formerly incarcerated individuals earn Bachelors and graduate-level degrees since 1967.
