ABSTRACT

As one of the first political psychologists hired by Stony Brook University in the mid-1980s, I reflect on my intellectual background and Milt Lodge’s role in my professional development. A brief history of the Stony Brook Political Psychology program and Milt Lodge’s own intellectual trajectory is provided. I then turn to a discussion of the evolution of our collaborative political cognition research program, as well as my independent research on political accountability. I conclude by noting that Milt Lodge’s sustained emphasis on theoretically motivated and rigorous experimental investigations of the cognitive psychological foundations of political judgment and reasoning had a profound influence on the field of political psychology.
