ABSTRACT

In Chapter 10, using conversation analysis as the applied framework, substantiated chiefly by the ethnography, the interaction of community members with one another is analyzed. It will be seen that this interaction is successful despite the linguistic difficulties and deficiencies, despite the non-access to the shared schematic knowledge of a common cultural and despite issues of racism that emerged in the institution. How the residents succeed in the contingent co-construction of meaning by mutual and reciprocal collaboration will be demonstrated, and how conversational order is maintained and the one-speaker-at-a-time rule applies.
