ABSTRACT
Different types of collective units which have served as the object of linguistic enquiry are considered, principally the speech community, which are is presented as a hierarchical organism. The individual and societal nature of language is considered, as in language and language in use, and then the various conceptions of communicative competence are explored. The community, the language and the language use under study in the book are 'located' in relation to these frameworks.
