ABSTRACT

Employing a generalized threefold framework of the ethnography of communication, in Chapter 5, the communicative activities and practices of the residents are described under the headings of speech situations, speech events and speech acts as a prolegomenon to the more detailed linguistic analysis that follows in the remaining chapters. This chapter is divided into sections on communicative situations in the canteen, at the reception desk, in the classrooms and in the offices of the institution where the members of the community live.
