ABSTRACT

This chapter gives an overview of some of the key challenges related to the theory and practice of sustainable supply chain management and recognises the importance of sustainable supply chain management in the study and practice of sustainability management. It discusses some of the main dilemmas related to the practice of sustainable supply chain management, including both social and environmental sustainability. The chapter relates the concept of sustainable supply chain management to the principles of Principles for Responsible Management Education, the principles of the Global Compact and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It also supports the principles of Value and Method by relating supply chain management to the principles of the Global Compact, and providing examples, tools and techniques that can be used by students and professionals. Finally, provoking debate regarding the challenges and the many trade-offs faced when managing the supply chain sustainably, supports the principle of Dialogue.
