ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the idea of sustainability as being constructed from social, environmental and economic elements. It also explores these elements as being fundamentally linked, and why this is important for business. The chapter provides two seminars detailing the importance of integrating sustainability and on how this is all related to the Sustainable Development Goals. It helps one to learn the following: recognise the fundamental linkages between social, environmental and economic pillars of sustainability in a business framework; understand the triple bottom line and what it means for business; appreciate the applied principles of sustainability and why they are fundamental to business; and to get an overview of the Sustainable Development Goals. Balanced scorecard offers significant scope in terms of sustainability, as it allows the incorporation of elements of environmental and social sustainability integrally into financial thought. The ecosystem services approach offers business a new way of embedding social and environmental sustainability into strategy and observing tangible results.
