ABSTRACT

Modern shamans can be teachers or parents who seem to work magic with children, understanding and guiding them towards healthy, productive lives. Some modern shamans operate explicitly in a healing profession, using energy, intuition, and insight, along with their expertise, knowledge, and learned skills, of course, to help others. Some are activists, focused on improving the community, society, or natural world around us by using their own inner light to help guide others to productive and healing decisions for that world. The inner light that shamans seem to have may come from their connection to source. The inner light of the shaman may also come from the fact that the shaman tends to follow what people can call his or her own "lights", rather than allowing the dictates of the society, the hierarchy, the parents, religion, or others to rule.
