ABSTRACT
Chapter 2 provides a brief overview of suicide in the Sault Sainte Marie Tribe, while focusing on nuances of reporting suicide as an official form of death, social pressures impacting discussion of suicide and mental health, stigma of suicide and suicide attempts, and history of suicide prevalence within living memory. Multigenerational perspectives and early ethnographic work within regional Ojibwa communities provide a rough timeline for suicide as a significant event in the twentieth century. This chapter segues into topics of death from Ojibwa cosmology.
