ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information and guidance to help university decision makers determine whether a university is ready to pursue Lean Higher Education (LHE) and, if not, what actions they might take to create a more hospitable environment for LHE to flourish. It also provides general recommendations to support the successful implementation of LHE as well as additional recommendations specific to the local- or university-wide implementation of LHE. LHE, when introduced as a new university-wide management system, has the potential to influence all aspects of the institution. For the implementation of LHE to be successful, mid- and first-level leaders must transition from conventional leadership beliefs and behaviors that exist at most universities to a new set of leadership beliefs and behaviors expected by an LHE management system. A well-designed strategic plan focuses the commitment of university resources to those priorities identified as critical to university success.
