ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: With the changes of English curriculum across the world, one thing remains: that teaching English deals with more than just language competencies. Teachers can teach English while at the same time addressing essential values. Scholarly discussion on the nature of literary text and literary teaching emphasizes that adressing value in teaching is feasible and demandable within the EFL classroom. However, inspite of the realization about the importance of addressing value aspects in literature teaching, studies on this subject have been insufficient. This paper discusses how values related to the issue of global citizenship can be addressed in English classrooms, especially in literature classes. It uses UNESCO’s core values category focusing on National Unity and Global Solidarity and its related values: love of country, democracy, active and responsible citizenship, interdependence, international understanding, global peace, and unity and diversity.
