ABSTRACT

This chapter presents information essential to teaching students with intellectual disabilities such as these in physical education. Intellectual disabilities have "many different etiologies and may be seen as a final common pathway of various pathological processes that affect the functioning of the central nervous system". It is important to understand that each youth with intellectual disabilities is unique in her or his tendencies, diversities, cultures, and experiences. Generally speaking, a teacher must understand etiologies of intellectual disabilities and associated conditions to develop effective physical education programs. Teachers must also seek input from the student, parents, the IEP team, and other professionals. It is important to keep in mind that with appropriate instructional planning, best practice strategies, proactive behavior management, proper modifications, and culturally relevant pedagogical practices, teaching students with intellectual disabilities can lead to meaningful and successful learning and interactive experiences for all.
