ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with definitions and etiology of "other health impairments". It discusses type 1 and type 2 Diabetes, seizure disorders, human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, asthma, and Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Diabetes mellitus was originally thought of as an adult disease whereby the body has difficulty processing glucose for energy. More specifically, the etiology for type 1 Diabetes can be traced to the body's inability to produce insulin to control glucose levels in the blood. The causes of seizures or seizure disorders may be either known or unknown. Known causes associated with genetic factors include abnormalities within the brain, complications from Diabetes, kidney failure, and lack of oxygen in young children. Physical educators are in a position to help monitor the diet and exercise programs for children with Diabetes. Teaching considerations should focus on adapting or modifying the general physical education environment before examining alternative physical education environments.
