ABSTRACT

Assessment is an important mechanism for providing information for accountability. Of the multiple forms of assessment, this chapter focuses on the following: norm-referenced, criterion-referenced, curriculum-based, authentic, intervention-based, and functional. Selection of an appropriate assessment instrument is important for any physical educator. The educator must carefully align the test to the age and needs of the student. The chapter discusses the role of assessment in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process and its use in formulating and meeting standards and benchmarks. An IEP is a written agreement outlining the special education and related services for a student with a disability that is developed, reviewed, and revised annually by IEP team members in accordance with Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The chapter presents the IEP, Individualized Family Service Plan, individualized health plan, and 504 plan to note differences and similarities among them.
