ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a review of the status of sport management pedagogy. It addresses the historical debate on whether sport management is a unique discipline within the academy and the resulting implications for its pedagogy. Van der Smissen noted that in order to prepare students for a career in sport management, the curriculum must comprise three areas: a professional core; general education; and practical and internships. Sport management educators have addressed the importance of integrating technology into sport management programs to enhance student learning experiences. Smart classrooms—those that are equipped with computers, multimedia projectors, Internet connections, document cameras, and Classroom Response Systems—are fast becoming the norm in higher education. Sport management academics are also designing, developing, and delivering online courses. The chapter presents best practices in sport management pedagogy, and concludes with commentary on future direction of scholarship, teaching, and learning in the discipline.
