ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the ways in which pilots handle two interfaces - that between themselves and other people, and that between themselves and the equipment that they are operating. The most important effects of personality in civil flying are, however, concerned with determining the ways in which individuals interact with one another on flight decks, and this area of social interaction is addressed. It would be possible to characterize individuals only in terms of their basic personality and the way in which they exhibit social skills, but when individuals are working in a team towards a common goal, it can be helpful to consider the individual's team or interactive style. A factor that is plainly instrumental in determining interpersonal behaviour on the flight deck is role. The role of pilots changes to a large degree depending on whether they are the handling or non-handling pilot.
