ABSTRACT

The dynamic relationship between creativity and technology is best exemplified by Trevor Horn's Zang Tuum Tumb (ZTT) work with Propaganda. Propaganda's second and last album with ZTT, Wishful Thinking, which comprises eight remixes by Bob Kraushaar and Paul Morley of the tracks on A Secret Wish, includes 'Jewelled', which uses material from both 'Jewel' and 'Duel'. The music on A Secret Wish is quite diverse in character. Increasingly, the technology used to create pop music defines aspects of the finished artefact. Using the same musical material in different recordings results in new artefacts –different interpretations with often radically altered aesthetic emphases. The artistic relationship between producer and balance engineer is clearly an important link in the recording process. Every record has a unique set of sound qualities and, as Steve Jones writes, 'the primary impact of recording technology has been to make the sound of a recording its identifying characteristic'.
