ABSTRACT

Personality, attitudes and beliefs are intangible in as much as they cannot be seen or studied directly but only inferred from what a person says or does. The precise relationship of attitude to personality will depend on the theoretical approach which is adopted in defining them and constructing their hypothetical basis. One of the characteristics of an attitude was that it tends to be rather enduring. It usually takes much persuasion to change a strongly held attitude such as that towards capital punishment or abortion. Many debates and discussions involve an active, two-way process of persuasion. Generally, a single face-to-face contact is thought to be the most effective mode of persuasion, followed by talking with small groups, showing a film or slides and, finally, using printed material. Persuasive communication, or propaganda, related to safety is one of the most complex in the field of large scale communication.
