ABSTRACT

This chapter establishes the significant roles of George Martin and his engineers, Ken Townsend and Geoff Emerick, including several inventions made during the Revolver recording sessions. Martin's role evolved throughout the Beatles' career. The chapter focuses on Martin and his relationship with the primary songwriters, Paul McCartney and John Lennon, with particular emphasis on the specific roles he undertakes with each collaborator. Under Martin's guidance, the Beatles and the production team brought the vague ideas to life by using voice altering methods, backwards guitar, tape loops, and other new recording techniques. For Lennon, Martin realized his ideas, whereas with McCartney, he continued to evolve as an orchestrator. McCartney and George Harrison incorporated some of the discoveries for use in their own compositions as well. These, however, were not the only consequential aspects of Revolver. The chapter describes changes in both the role of the producer and in studio practices.
