ABSTRACT

The generation of valid and reliable instructional theory is problematic in educational organizations in general, and even more so in the aviation environment. This chapter argues that instructional and training research in aviation has a very narrow and inconsistent scientific base. Aviation is a specialist application, requiring an eclectic selection of general instructional and training theory. Aviation differs from other forms of, and especially school, education in its structure, mission, focus, budget and staffing. There is, however, some common ground between aviation instruction and education or training in general. Behavioural theory, links presage and product through instructional objectives and evaluation. Behavioural objectives are a simple way of individualizing instruction while maintaining systematic and demonstrable strable standardization. Comprehensive reviews of educational research provide the sources for a selection of conclusions with implications for the process of aviation instruction.
