ABSTRACT

This chapter contains Five Ps for strategy; the principles on which it is based; underlying assumptions; guidance on application, and relevant issues; and related models. The Five Ps are: Plan, Ploy, Pattern, Position, and Perspective. Strategy is implemented in many different ways, often depending on the specific requirements at the time for example, defining activities or products or considering broad market positioning. The five Ps are simply labels to help develop appropriate strategic thinking. They should not define or restrict thinking but should act as an aid to unravel the complexity implicit in strategy. Consciously considering strategy in different ways can help people to think laterally and creatively about a broad range of issues. The definitions can be used to analyse the breadth of strategic issues faced by an organization and to help assess strategy from different viewpoints. The model can help to define both the formal and informal issues impacting on strategy and its development.
