ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the concepts of gods and, most importantly, of God. It discusses the idea of God in classical theism. The chapter also discusses puzzles about the idea of God. Monotheism is the belief in a single god. Polytheism is the belief that there's more than one god. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints offers an interesting variation on the familiar concept of God. If a pantheist conception of God is correct, then the world and God are identical. If God is a person, as Jews, Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, and many others would say, it seems perfectly clear that God is a being. However, some thinkers have denied that God is a being at all. The Bible portrays God as walking in the garden in the cool of the evening, as fashioning the first human from the clay, and as bargaining with Abraham.
