ABSTRACT
‘Martha Preston’ was published in Sartain’s Union Magazine, 6 (February 1850) pp. 133–8. Signed ‘By the author of “ Mary Barton”’, it was EG’s second contribution to this American illustrated monthly magazine. Sartain’s was established in 1848 by John Sartain, a well-known copper engraver, and his business partner, William Sloanaker. Together they purchased the existing Union Magazine, renaming it Sartain’s Union Magazine, and moved it from New York to Philadelphia, where it continued until August 1852. 1
