ABSTRACT

419The manuscripts of these two fragments were found among the family papers made available to A. W. Ward for the preparation of the Knutsford edition and its accompanying ‘Biographical Introduction’. Ward included them at the end of volume seven, Cousin Phillis and Other Tales, with the title ‘Two Fragments of Ghost Stories’ (Knutsford, vol. vii, pp. 721–7). In his Introduction to the volume he noted that they were ‘found, without date or other clue to the period of their production, among Mrs. Gaskell’s papers, and now for the first time put into print’ (ibid, p. xl). The manuscripts have not subsequently been located (see IELM, p. 805).
