ABSTRACT

The moon shone bright, and Skim was in high spirits and quite at his ease. I was not exactly so, for having scarcely ever crossed a horse before, I jolted from side to side, and went on in momentary expectation of being thrown. I was beginning to please myself, with the idea that my horsemanship was somewhat improved, when my saddle slipped round, and off I rolled. I did not suffer from the fall, but I was greatly annoyed at it, as Skim laughed immoderately at the accident, and was a full quarter of an hour before he would help me to set matters right again, by tightening the girth, which I did not know how to adjust for myself.
