ABSTRACT

It was scarcely possible, in so small a town as Lancaster, that Anne should have lost her way; or, if she had, that she would not have been soon put right: any other case than this I could not conjecture. I again hurried home to make further inquiries, which were equally fruitless. All I could learn was, that she had waited impatiently for my return till the time for the performance approached, and then had gone out alone in the direction of the theatre, leaving a message for me that she had proceeded thither. I ran out into the street, and made inquiry of every body I met; but from the stare of surprise which was upon every face, I little doubt they took me for a madman. In this way I ran through all the streets of the town, and pried into every lane and by-path, but all to no purpose.
